Credit Courses for Science Divers

Scientific Diving - BSC 4934 - Fall 2009 (4 credits)

Course Description
This course is designed for the scientist or scientist in training who plans to use diving as a tool for underwater research, observation, and data collection. Successful completion of classroom work, pool, springs and ocean dives are required. Skills covered include dive planning, emergency management, underwater navigation, surveying techniques, as well as instrument deployment and recovery.

Course Objectives
a)To develop the attitude, knowledge, skills and judgment required to safely plan and implement a scientific diving project
b) To meet national Scientific Diver requirements as defined by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences

Prerequisites
Register online, by permission of the instructor only, open water certification, recent diving experience (at least five dives in the last 12 months), personal diving equipment (mask, fins, snorkel & knife), proof of Divers Alert Network insurance

DAN First Aid for Professional Divers

Course Description
This course is designed for divers who have an affiliation with an aquarium, commercial diving company, or scientific diving operation. It includes: Oxygen First Aid for Diving Injuries, AEDs for Diving, First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries, and workplace CPR and first aid.

Course Objectives
To learn and practice the skills necessary to maintain the life of an injured or ill person until assistance arrives

Hazardous Material (hazmat)

Course Description
This course broadens the students' awareness of the potentially dangerous chemical exposures involved with cleaning and repairing SCUBA equipment. Also covered are the procedures for storing and handling these chemicals.

Equipment Repair and Maintenance

Course Description
This course is designed for certified divers who wish to learn more about the equipment side of scuba diving. This course covers topics from supervision, inventory, and risk management, to cylinder filling, regulator repairs, and compressor maintenance. Throughout the class, students will be required to stay current on selected readings and attend mandatory lab sessions. Students will be tested periodically on this material.

DAN Neurological Assessment

Course Description
Participation in this course provides the student with the training to recognize and monitor signs of neurological damage often associated with decompression illness.

Course Objectives
a)To learn when an On-site Neurological Assessment is appropriate
b)To learn the signs of neurological disorder as well as the process of assessing and monitoring the effected diver

Rescue Diver

Course Description
This course trains divers in the knowledge and skills needed to manage risks and effectively handle inwater problems and diving emergencies. Included are: assists, transports, surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat and shore based scuba divers.


Dry Suit Diver

Course Description
Students completing this course will be able to demonstrate the proper use of a dry suit. This includes maintaining neutral buoyancy, dealing with in-water emergencies, and maintenance of the suits.

Nitrox

Course Description
Nitrox diving is conducted using tanks containing air enriched with oxygen. Students completing this course will be able to analyze their own tanks' gas mixture and plan safe dives taking the special considerations of nitrox diving into account. The course will include a two hour lecture and at least two open water dives.

Full-Face Mask (AGA)

Course Description
This course trains divers in the skills necessary to dive using a full-face mask apparatus. Also covered is the use of underwater communication equipment in conjunction with full-face mask gear.

Open Water certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., NAUI, PADI, SSI, YMCA)


40 Hour Surface Supplied Training Certificate Course

Course Description
This is an intense training course designed to meet the needs of the scientific diving and the public safety diving community. The course incorporates commercial diving safety measures and regulatory requirements into the diving techniques of the scientist and public safety officers. Surface supplied diving techniques utilize the Kirby Morgan superlite 17B and KMB 18. Course curriculum includes regulatory compliance training including OSHA, DOT, and ADC diving regulations, advanced diving medicine, physiology and physics, line-tended / surface-supplied searching techniques, and certification as a Kirby Morgan Diving Systems International equipment inspection technician.
