Diving at Florida State University

The Academic Diving Program at Florida State offers opportunities for students and faculty to obtain Scientific Diving Status to become expert science divers.

All candidate divers are required to complete the ADP DIVER QUESTIONNAIRE, a General Release and Waiver of Liability Form, a written examination on general SCUBA diving knowledge, and a practical skills and fitness evaluation. Written exams and fitness evaluations are scheduled through the ADP office. The practical evaluation includes swimming skills, skin diving skills and SCUBA diving skills.

Scientific Divers are required to complete the ADP Diver Resume, the Statement of Understanding, a Disabilities Reporting Form, and a DIVING MEDICAL HISTORY. They are also required to have a DIVING MEDICAL EXAM (to be filled out by physician).

The Diving Medical Examination Any physician knowledgeable in hyperbaric medicine can conduct the comprehensive physical examination. The examination results must be provided to the ADP University Diving Officer on the forms provided below. The Diving Officer, in consultation with the physician, is the sole determiner of an individuals physical fitness to dive. Prospective divers must resolve any and all medical issues directly with the Program Physician. The cost of this evaluation is the responsibility of the prospective diver. FSU divers with grants should contact ADP for assistance with grant-funded physicals.

Note: Allow at least six weeks between scheduling a physical exam and obtaining ADP clearance.

Equipment The Academic Diving Program maintains a complete inventory of SCUBA, remote sensing, and field equipment for the diving needs of students and faculty affiliated with the program. Directions for checking out equipment and equipment check-out forms appear on this site: http://www.marinelab.fsu.edu/adp/equipment.html.
