Facilities Available at the FSUCML

The FSUCML is well-equipped with research and classroom space, and field-oriented technologies to support ecological and oceanographic research in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The site is in close proximity to a remarkably diverse array of habitats.
Research space includes laboratories, greenhouses, and environmental chambers. Supplies can be purchased through the FSUCML stockroom. Teaching space includes wet classrooms, a conference room (seats 12), and an auditorium (seats 60).

Marine Technical Operations cover the vessels, scientific diving with SCUBA, and other research support, including help with the collection, care and feeding of live organisms, equipment check out, and laboratory and field safety. Personnel are available to assist in the planning and staging of laboratory and/or field-based research and educational programs. FSUCML users have limited access to the maintenance shop. All vessel, equipment, and housing use requires a reservation.

The FSUCML dorms (four cottages and a guest house) provide comfortable housing for visiting faculty, students, and agency professionals on the FSUCML campus for overnight, week-long, or longer-term (sabbatical-length) stays. All dorms are fully furnished, and include linens and fully equipped kitchens. We suggest that you shop ahead of time for food, paper towels, soap, and other items typically forgotten. There are great places to eat in Panacea, Sopchoppy, and Carrabelle, and catering for large groups can be arranged by prior arrangement.

The FSUCML is a great setting for holding faculty or staff retreats.

Each dorm sleeps 6 and has a bedroom (2 sets of bunks), one bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a living room/dinette area. The living room in Dorm 1 has a fold out couch while the one in Dorm 2 has a set of bunk beds.

The Guest Dorm (sleeps 16) has four bedrooms and two baths, a full kitchen, and a large central dining-living area that opens onto a beachside patio with a picnic table and Adirondack chairs. Minimum occupancy is 8 people.

We offer shuttle service between the main campus and the laboratory to provide transportation at no cost to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students working at the lab. Other employees may ride if seats are available. However, faculty and students get first choice.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) SERVICES Computer accounts are provided for all FSUCML faculty, staff, and students. The FSUCML IT Administrator is responsible for making all IT device connections, adding software to on-site computers purchased through FSU, and making recommendations for computer and peripheral purchases. Please submit all requests for IT services to the IT Administrator listed here: http://marinelab.fsu.edu/staff/fsucmlstaff.html.
Visitors have access to the internet at the FSUCML through campus-wide wireless or in laboratories via direct hook ups.

All users of IT resources at the FSUCML are subject to Florida State University Policy and Procedures. Users are expected to comply with the university's Best Practices for Computing at FSU, which can be found at http://www.its.fsu.edu/Security/Computing-Security/Best-Practices. Be certain to keep computers up to date on anti-virus software. Users will receive notification of these updates by email.

COMMUNICATIONS All FSUCML staff and faculty have land-line telephones in their offices. FSU-based faculty and FSUCML-based staff requiring telephones in their laboratories are responsible for all fees associated with telephone hookup and operation. Short-term visitors are encouraged to bring cell phones to make long-distance calls.

The FSUCML Staff provides some support for the collection, care, and feeding of live organisms. Fees apply.

PERMITS: All FSU-associated users are required to have current collection permits from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (contact Kyle Miller. Email: Kyle.Miller@MyFWC.com). Non-FSU visitors can make limited collections for educational purposes only if accompanied by a permit-authorized FSUCML staff member. All organisms collected on the FSUCML permit must be returned to the wild within 48 hours.
Please limit collections to the minimum required for your research so that you do as little damage to the local environment as possible. Specimens no longer needed for education or research must be returned to their collection site.

ANIMAL CARE AND USE: Anyone collecting or using vertebrate specimens at the FSUCML must have an FSU protocol on file with the FSU Animal Care & Use Committee (ACUC) and make a copy of the ACUC protocol available to FSUCML staff. Visiting scientists must provide FSUCML with a copy of their animal care and use protocol.

Any user interested in conducting long-term research at aquatic sites in the area must submit a research plan, including detailed site location to ensure the coordination of all projects. All research sites must be clearly marked "FSU-FSUCML RESEARCH." At the conclusion of all projects, the principal investigator is responsible for removing all site markings and any structures.
